Whilst I accept that he may have more power this time with the republicans winning both houses how much harm did he actually do in his last term in your opinion? From my POV, the greatest harm he did during his first term was to stack the Supreme Court with conservative judges. Had he not been able to do that, Roe v Wade would still be on the books. One of my greatest concerns is that the three liberal justices on the SC are likely to be replaced by conservatives under Trump 2.0, which will hamstring any future Democrat administration. I am not familiar with Wade V Roe. It seems strnage that there are not checks and balances in place to prevent an administration from packing the supreme court. That said I am not sure if there are checks and balances in pla e to stop gerrymandering so i don't know. Are their anythings that the supreme court has done that you see as harmful? I recognise your concerns but I am a big one for practical examples (easier for me to get my head around)

Roe v Wade was the abortion rights issue.
It's one of the most disturbing things about US politics, that their judiciary are not independent and impartial, but political appointees.

With ageing population, increased healthcare costs, climate change and environment, recovery from Covid, global instability etc, it feels like living standards in the Western world have peaked. That is scary enough for people doing OK , really really scary for those already struggling. If you are on the verge of drowning and someone comes along with a straw to cling to, even if a large part of you knows it is illusionary, I guess temptation is to grab it, especially if that someone also gives you someone else (whether foreigners or “the elite) to blame for your dire situation. Assuming the scientists are right, humanity faced a challenge as to whether we could work collectively and take a small hit now to avoid our grandkids taking a much harder hit later. We have flunked the test with the biggest nail in the coffin inflicted yesterday. Better hope the scientists are wrong. There are always challenges. That is not to dismiss them but to keep things in perspective. I think two world wars were pretty challenging. As too the legacy for Grand kids well I don;t think you can really argue against Steve's position there in that we have a democracy and those who are concerned about global warning have singularly failed to win the argument (given that you don't think they have done enough and that the test has been failed) Will global warming make previously uninhabitable places habitable moving forward? Isn't there a lot of permafrost won't that change? As far as the biggest nail yesterday for me it smacks of people having a hissy fit because they didn't get what they wanted. I am no fan of Trump and I am concerned for the people of Ukraine btu as I posed before...what harm did trump do in his last term?

All round depressing results. He's won both houses, holds the Supreme Court and the Presidency. Might not keep him out of jail though and those mid terms in 2026 might limit the damage. Most depressing though is what this all says about the majority of USA voters and what they value as it seems integrity, decency and caring about others than themselves don't enter their decision processes Can't see me ever going to the USA again now. You won't go to America again because they elected Donald Trump? Not per se but because it seems over 50% of the people I might meet there are shallow, unprincipled self servers who like to vote for shallow, unprincipled self servers and the place is going to get even more risky. Anyway in well over 100 visits I've seen just about everything in the USA I might ever want to see.

Biden has to take most of the blame for this. In 2020 he declared that he would be a single term president. To leave it so late to drop out of the race has destroyed his legacy. It left no time for the party to find a decent candidate. Kamala has been hopeless. Doubling down on identity politics and concentrating on issues such as abortion which are well down the list of concerns for the electorate. How bad do you have to be to lose to a convicted felon who sat on his hands while a mob attacked the Capitol? A man found guilty of sexual assault and fraud. I'm seriously depressed about the future of the Western world. Especially the future of the environment. Whilst I accept that he may have more power this time with the republicans winning both houses how much harm did he actually do in his last term in your opinion? He destroyed confidence in the democratic process, damaged the peaceful transfer of power and encouraged a mob to go down to the Capitol and fight like hell. 4 years later he still hasn't conceded the 2020 election.

He backed the word of Putin against the information of his own intelligence agencies. Remember ''I see no reason Putin wouldn't tell the truth''. He pulled out of the Paris Climate Accord.

For me that's all just hot air and emotional overreaction apart from the Paris thing. Don't get me wrong I am not saying you are full of hot air but that a lot of the stuff doesn;t have that much of a material impact. It's like Steve above saying 50% of amaericans are shallow. For me an overeaction. For context I am just a bit fed up with people catastrophising every little thing. That's not to say Trump couldn;t do some really bad sh1t and that I'd rather him not be president but like I said I am trying to keep a sense of perspective over this not least for my own mental health.

I doubt much of that meant anything to Trump supporters — they appear to be more concerned about the cost of filling their gas tanks…

Biden has to take most of the blame for this. In 2020 he declared that he would be a single term president. . . No he didn't. Several political observers opined that.

That said Biden does have a huge amount of the blame. He should never have stood for re-election and that would have allowed a candidate more detached from his policies to stand against Trump. Harris was never going to be able to campaign as a change candidate.

Or in short it is wrong to say he promised to be a single term president as your links confirm.

Avon Calling
It's such a pity that the small segment from The Telegraph's front page didn't show for you, as it encapsulated perfectly the point I was trying to make. I suspect some of Zany's green ink has seeped into the system and prevented attachments being visible on occasions. But fear not, the perception that I've inadequately failed to explain, is held by a not insignificant cohort of the electorate ..... and is I believe, central to the comprehensive victory achieved by Trump's Republicans, and central to the substantial number of votes garnered by Reform at our last election.
The good news, is that over the coming weeks and months, the analysis, and ongoing examination as to why people flocked to Trump and shunned caring sharing Kamala, will be coming at us in spades. While there'll be some commentators telling you there's no need to look any further than 'nastiness, selfishness, and greed' to provide the answers ..... there will be plenty of others who will explain what I was trying to get at much more effectively. The Americans alienated from their own Government that can find millions if not billions for weapons to be dropped onto people in foreign countries, but couldn't come up with the funds to adequately help those who needed life or death assistance with the floods in areas of the States such as North Carolina a month or so ago. The British who feel alienated from their own Government that provides State funding to keep its prisoners teeth in good health, while at the same time many poor working class areas are dental deserts for law abiding citizens.
I'm sure this has stoked enough antipathy, that sufficient people couldn't wait to throw Rishi, Sleepy Joe, and Kamala out on their ear. The inquests will make interesting reading.
