Debates tend to be side tracked. It happens all the time. All of us - you and I included - who have participated in the Scottish Nationalism thing, are complicit in this de facto thread derailment. I suggest we cease doing so and get back to the winter fuel allowance issue, if anyone has anything new to add on that issue. I think I have said all I have to say on the topic, unless someone comes up with a new angle worth discussing. thats a fair enough post. I agree. I think the new angle will be added when we see the collateral damage to pensioners and the elderly and how starmers punitive de facto withdrawal of the winter fuel payment hits pensioners. Im guessing he is praying for a mild winter. I havent seen any long term forecasts that are taken this seriously this far out , but I wonder if someone has suggested to him the winter might be mild , or is it with such a majority albeit on such a record low vote share , he just doesn't care? A result of our not fit for purpose voting system means that vote share doesn't actually matter. It is bums on seats in the Commons that matter. And Labour's majority is pretty well impregnable until whenever the next general election will be. And that is likely to be 5 years away and will only come sooner if Starmer is certain he can win it. So for better or worse we are stuck with them for now. Re pensioner winter fuel payments, as I described earlier Labour have likely calculated with all their twonks number crunching and data analysing that they have more to gain than lose by this measure. It is highly likely for one thing that most of those being hit never vote for them anyway. And many more of those paying for it via their taxes probably do. But pensioners genuinely struggling as a result is potentially damaging optics. So I suspect that whilst sticking with the central policy, ways will be found to help a few more 0f the ones who might struggle. But as ever with these New Labour centrist types, it will be political expediency that will be the decisive factor, not right or wrong.

Anyone know why a thread on Winter Fuel Allowance became yet another thread on Scottish Nationalism? stop appealing to others to hold your hand Steve. You are a big boy , and dont need mummy as I have told you many times before , to fight your battles for you. It's sad that fair questions distress you so much and that you lapse into trolling at the turn of a hat but I guess that's a burden we'll have to bear.

Anyway, the politics of spite and envy, demonising the vulnerable (and poor) as Keir Starmer and others have done is contemptible. That's what they do. All the while, handing out favours to their rich mates and working on behalf of the corporations and the Neoliberal order.
I find it so sick that priorities are focused on taking money away from those who might have 'too much' in savings, while the rich are rewarded at every turn. That's how society is set up to work and it's morally indefensible - by anyone

At least they're having fun while cutting winter fuel allowance for soon-to-be-shivering Scottish OAPs

Yup, the audacity of raving it up whilst pensioners will be shivering this winter after having their coal allowance withdrawn
Working class gal made it good, now on top of the ladder and kicking others off of it eh? Isn't that just heartwarming

Are we really criticizing government ministers for having a night out now? Does that not feel just a tad desperate?

Not as desperate as shivering pensioners will be in their own homes I think you doth protest too much. Should politicians cancel all joyous occasions until everyone is OK? There are a million children without a bed to sleep in. 6 million people live in poverty. I think you'll find its not the politicians fault this is the case. Its those who wont pay for a fairer country.

Awesome Zany, well I'm sure the politicians have no part in not paying for a fairer country despite mostly being in the top 1% I have no issue with anyone partying, I just thought it was instructive they are having fun while pensioners will shiver this winter and children, like you said, don't have a bed to sleep in and millions are in poverty - and labour are doing certain things to exacerbate it Maybe if they did something to help it, they wouldn't get so much stick for partying while the other half suffers
