We should abolish tariffs on anything we do not grow or make.

I don't know much about tariffs. What goods do they apply to now and have they increased post Brexit?

We should abolish tariffs on anything we do not grow or make. Makes sense. What is the point of tariffs on foods we cannot grow here? There are no domestic suppliers to protect in such cases. If we want to eat oranges we have no choice but to import them and tariffs just make them more expensive for us. This is doubly stupid when the items in question, eg oranges, are very good for us from a healthy eating perspective. Tariffs on such products serve no useful purpose at all, unless they suppose that by making oranges more expensive, we will eat British apples instead. But such a supposition is largely going to be silly. Because you don't tend to buy oranges because you fancy eating an apple.

Your thinking to direct Vinny. We don't grow oranges but we do grow other fruit. If oranges and cheaper, people stop buying pears.

If I want pears I'll buy pears, if I want oranges I'll buy oranges. But, I oppose the double standards. We don't need tariffs on the things we don't grow or make.

Because they compete with fruit that we do grow.

No, they don't. They compete with fruit Spain grows. We've had tariff free oranges on sale in our shops for all the time I've been alive. And we still do.
The only purpose in orange tariffs, is protecting Spanish grown fruit.

But more importantly, if we used tariffs well you might see British strawberries out selling Spanish ones. Of course you run the risk of a trade war.

A certain trade war. And as a nation that hasn't been self sufficient since Victoria was on the throne such would be a disaster for us.

Competition reduction, tariffs make non EU oranges more expensive and less competitive.

I'm not advocating trade wars, I'm advocating the opposite, I'm advocating for trade liberalism, with one caveat, only do FTAs with democracies. No trade with dictatorships, at all. Total embargo, unless democratic reform takes place and they cease to be a dictatorship, in which case they too can enjoy trade liberalism.

With respect Vinny, the real world is a little more complex than you would like it to be.
Out of interest if you set tariffs at zero for goods made in country B that we don’t make ourselves, what incentive is there for country B to do a trade deal reducing tariffs on UK made goods?
