But it's very clear it doesn't ban normal bent bananas Did I say that it had? It provided waffle, didn't it? All that was needed was a brief note "no bruising, damage, deformity or rot", not the absolute drivel they came out with. You've obviously never read a legal contract.

It's legislation for greengrocers and supermarkets for goodness sake.
It doesn't need to be waffle. It only needs to give the basics. One single line of information would have sufficed.

No legal document needs to waffle as much as they do, but speak to our solicitors and they'll say they do if you don't want other solicitors finding loop holes.

Practically every contract law dispute revolves around the interpretation of the contract. Tens of thousands in legal fees are saved by writing an airtight contract in the first place. Similarly, if legislation, regulations, and directives are spelt out in exact terms, there is no need to go to court to ask the court to interpret it. The EU saves its citizens millions in legal fees by providing precision. It's weird to find someone criticising something that is so often lauded.

Did I say that it had? It provided waffle, didn't it? All that was needed was a brief note "no bruising, damage, deformity or rot", not the absolute drivel they came out with. All legislation is written that way. Language is elastic. Words can be stretched to mean more than is intended. Extraordinarily precise technical language is required to avoid this. This happens in every jurisdiction. But the problem faced by the EU is even greater than is normal. They have to produce legislation in many different languages, all of which have to mean precisely the same thing. If they fail in this, the law will be interpreted in different ways in different member states. This means that EU law will be different in different member states. So, extra efforts have to be made to achieve exact language. Can you even begin to conceive how difficult that is? It's arduous and time consuming, but there's no alternative. And EU law is famous worldwide for its quality. It's often imitated outside the EU. Read any non-EU commercial law journal and you will frequently find calls to adopt legislation based on the EU model. The legislation you describe as waffle is in fact the gold standard. It will appear as waffle to you only because you're not accustomed to reading legal documents. Nail hit head

We are talking about standards for bananas. The less room for misunderstanding the better. "Keep it simple stupid" works better than complexity when we're talking about rules for shop assistants to follow. Shop assistants are not politicians. The sheer amount of drivel in EU rules overcomplicates, confuses and leads to misunderstandings, just as you lot misunderstood and thought I was talking about bendy bananas, rather than the absurd drivel of the policy.

I certainly didn't think it was about bendy bananas. I explained its meaning first post in.

Take some sections of the regulation and rewrite them in the way you think it could be done. This will be interesting.

Rather pleased to say we are now the world's fourth largest exporter, again. Back when we were in the EU, we were in a much weaker position.

We're the second biggest service exporter in the world after the USA, we're also one of the world's top oil exporting countries. And we are the world's fourth biggest exporter partly for these reasons. 2023 was the same.
