It's absolutely horrendous, thoughts are with the families of those missing presumed dead.

It seems incredible that it was only 6 that died. A mayday sent out from the boat and some quick action from the police who were able to stop cars going onto the bridge meant it was only the construction workers repairing the road surface who were on it when it collapsed.

Agree, incredible that there weren't more fatalities. I can't understand how the bridge just collapsed like that after being struck.

Agree, incredible that there weren't more fatalities. I can't understand how the bridge just collapsed like that after being struck. The design of the bridge meant that its integrity as a whole relied on all of it remaining intact. Once one bit failed the consequences were dire. A better question is, knowing the vulnerability of the bridge design, why weren't the main piers protected?

We hear a lot about failing infrastructure in the US, will this be a spur to make the investments necessary? Will a conversation about infrastructure favour Biden in the upcoming election. What the US needs is a leader that gets things done not a fraud who makes big promises and fails to achieve any of them. Biden passed the largest infrastructure spending bill in US history. Trump complained about having to flush the toilet 15 times.

It's just an accident - It really doesn't have to be Trump's fault.
If you protected all the bridges in the country, something else would go wrong. I think this is one case when all the grand narratives look a bit daft. Shit happens and not all eventualities can be protect against 100% fail-safe.

Just saying Biden has a better reputation on infrastructure spending. More tax cuts won't help and that's the only big bill Trump ever passed in his time at the helm. If infrastructure becomes an election issue it's better for the Dems.

If infrastructure becomes an election issue it's better for the Dems. Biden has a reputation for blowing dollars out of his arse on social engineering. Just because you call it 'infrastructure', doesn't mean anything of much use is happening. The best approach to tax policy is a matter of political debate and taxing more doesn't means things work better. I think you will find Baltimore is Democrat and the state is responsible for the bridge's upkeep.
