Hi Posters New and old. I'm Zany. I do most of the modding here. Just so you know my system. If I add a Green Edit its advice (calm down, step back) this is to stop threads deteriorating into fights. If I add a Red edit its a warning to do as asked etc. You will not get sanctioned for your opinions (Unless they are against all forums rules) Orac and us Mods love diverse opinion and the right to challenge it.
If you have concerns with my actions please PM me and i will attempt to explain myself as best I can. I am only human (if that )

Please carry on Zany. One comment though: doesn't Pro Boards give you a built in warnings system (I know phpBB based boards do as a default) This may refer support.proboards.com/page/rules#mi5

I think a quiet word by pm works better. It was the method that Carter and the other bloke (whose name I've temporarily forgotten) mostly used on Fox's site. I think a public telling-off can cause people to become defensive and prolong the difficulty, often with accusations of bias. That said, I've absolutely no complaints about the modding.

The problem with the quiet word is the other party are not aware of it and feel the mods aren't doing anything. Anyway thank you for your support, lets see how it goes.

Just in case you aren't aware, you can include more than one recipient in a pm. Both parties could be included, and the whole thing taken out of public view. With no public loss of face, co-operation is more likely (in my experience).

My experience is that the protagonist pops up in the forum making their own version of what was said to them in the PM and garners support. What I want to do is be able to have public discussion, which should be done (as a Mod) in a pleasant reasoned way, persuading the person of why you are asking them to change, rather than citing rules, infringements etc. Only using your powers if someone refuses to move. I do use PM's as well, but very much in the same way. To discuss.

If you want you can be manipulative and tell them that Orac has a very bad temper and , if they continue, you wont be able to protect them from his fury.

I always co-operated without question. The moderating style was completely different at Tinpot's place, with open displays of mod power. This led to open disputes with mods, several flounces, and complaints taken to threads in the Suggestions Forum, where fuel was often poured on the flames by uninvolved but vexatious parties. What's more, it's just more pleasant to have an invisible moderating hand. We don't need a visible police presence. That said, you're the mod. You're the one putting in the time and suffering the frustration of having to clean up threads when things go awry. Of course, you should take the approach you think will make life easier.

I wish you every luck with the role Zany. Not one I’d be overly willing to take on.
We are all grown ups. In real life I suspect we are all capable of having grown up conversations even with those we disagree with. Quite why online forums seem to descent into primary school level bickering and insults, I really don’t understand.
Try not to let it happen on this forum mate.
