It seems like a very convoluted way to raise money to fund the NHS, there must be more direct ways that work more quickly For a government that have promised no tax rises on the conventional taxes and all the sneaky taxes used up. I think its a big ask. He's known for lying constantly and u-turning all the time, so might as well make it count

What' s the first thing this government should do.? What's the most effective thing the government could do? For me its release land for building. This reduces house prices, then mortgages, rents, business rents. It takes money from the landed and shares it out. It boosts the economy as people have more in their pockets, you could even moderately increase taxes. It frees up money for investment by taking away the easy guaranteed investment of house building, It reduces prices as business sees costs fall ( Business rent has kept pace with house rent BTW) If you want to short cut this you could always tax the money lenders, but they would just increase their prices because they have a monopoly on supply and demand. Your thoughts. I totally agree with what you have said and have been saying much the same thing myself in my own way and with my usual excess of verbosity for a while now. You have said it far more succinctly and effectively than I ever have, so am happy to simply endorse your words.

If you 'simply release' land for house building in the technically arid South East then it would just create water shortages and ever bigger sewage incident problems. And even bigger traffic jams.
We're full up

So do we agree that building houses makes the biggest difference to all the issues? I have long been saying the same thing, and have long regarded the housing crisis as the number one problem which contributes to so many other problems. Indeed the top reason for me parting company with New Labour was it's utter failure to do anything meaningful re the already evident housing crisis. I know that at times I see the current Labour leadership as New Labour reincarnated, but they do sound like they recognise the problems and are serious about addressing them, in a way that the Blair government never truly did. If they seriously, effectively, and successfully address the housing crisis they will do much to winning me over.

Labour have already effectively said that the Rwanda scheme is over.

Labour have already effectively said that the Rwanda scheme is over. Yes! But in all fairness it never was a thing.

it was the most dishonest piece of UK legislation passed in living memory so in that import it very much was a 'thing' as it defined the UK as a dishonest nation.

Ok let's start with the basics: cutting off water/power etc to Gaza and his double talk on that, then let's move on to what he said about Corbyn. Or nationalising industries. Or countless other things............

The first thing the govt should do is start properly funding the NHS and reform it so it works properly. Then end the Rwanda scheme as Steve says. Then introduce reasonable taxes and close loopholes for the ultra-rich, introduce a wealth tax. Then end the disgusting regime at the DWP that denies terminally ill people benefits and turn assessments back over to qualified health professionals instead of private corps End ridiculous Tory education schemes introduced by the likes of Gove - and go back to strengthening the curriculum and investing in schools so they aren't crumbling. End all contracts to Fujitsu which are ongoing after the Horizon Post Office scandal. Invest much more in defence and quickly reform the armed forces, so we actually stand a chance in the world war that's on our doorstep. Sort out the police and courts systems as fast as possible to maintain order in the UK. There are so many other things but those jump out for now borgro end the disgusting regime at the DWP that denies terminally ill people benefits What benefits are you talking about? Has far has i know they get instant access to pip.

Has far has i know they get instant access to pip. As someone with a progressive medical condition I have applied for PIP but was turned down on the grounds that my ability to function is not too seriously impaired as yet. Which is fair enough. I have a booklet that tells me how the points are calculated and though advised to apply by the DWP I always knew that I was not yet ill enough. There is however no such thing as an immediate payout. It takes typically many weeks before a decision is made. If you do qualify, the criteria is entirely based upon your level of incapacity and takes zero account of your wealth or earnings. It is non means tested so if you are entitled it has zero effect upon any other benefits you might receive but is in addition to them. Likewise it is awarded to people who have serious conditions even if they are very well off. A rich person with no legs will still get it. There is a question to be had as to whether or not such benefits should be means tested. But it is difficult in practice because people lower down the income scale might not be able to afford to work if they are disabled and such support is withdrawn.
