Wind has been used as an energy source since about the 8th century, and water powered trip hammers for pounding grain and ore were used in China as far back as 200 BCE.
It might be interesting to know the reasons why both energy sources were overtaken by more polluting systems...

I forgot, solar energy has been used by humans since 700 BCE.
Looks like there’s not much new, just refinements of what we can do — though there might be some debate over whether solar use was an early use of nuclear power even though we’re still trying to usefully replicate fusion…

It might be interesting to know the reasons why both energy sources were overtaken by more polluting systems... Sheer muscle power, the same reason the ICE took over from steam. Wind technology at the time could not match steam let alone oil.
