I mean, really, how out of touch are the Tories? It might be popular with a few pensioners but nobody else wants this, least of all the armed forces who want professional volunteers.

Anyone in tune with actual public opinion outside your typical care home would know this would fly like a lead balloon. I have heard it said in broadcast media that only 9% of those under 50 intend to vote Tory. How they expect shit like this to improve that is a total mystery. They have for a start pretty much guaranteed that hardly any young voters are going to vote for them. A harking back to the 1950s is never going to appeal to anyone not even born then.
