Many cat lovers seem to be trapped maintaining the approval of their cat. very often it seems a dysfunctional relationship.
A cat lover will be trapped rubbing their cat, even though they really need to do something else. They can't bring themselves to ignore the cat and get a look of disapproval.
People talk about the stupidity of dogs relative to cats, but they are wrong. A dog is clever enough to understand that it is far better off as your second than being its own dog. Because a dog understands its reliance on you, a dog is loyal and thankful - ie actually likes you.

Dogs are on-side with humans because they can comprehend enough of the human world to choose a side. Not only can a dog understand his situation enough to see its reliance on you, it can comprehend enough of your world to often understand when you need its help.Your point about the asymmetry of the relationship with cats is well made. A dog is happy to be a worthwhile member of the team.
Feed your dog just after you eat, praise his ability to find the ball you threw. Set up challenges only he can do.
Race your dog and see how excited he is to beat you at this task.
Build their confidence and you have a friend for life.
Much the same as humans.
