Agreed, Starmers desire to keep Labour looking good by constantly telling us what a shit storm they inherited is having an effect on economic growth.

It's probably worse than that. All of us on this forum put together probably make about as much difference as we would by pissing into the Atlantic

They are playing politics, blaming the previous government for everything and how bad things are now is standard practice and usually works for a short while.
Also pointing out that things are going to get worse because of what the previous government left them with, deflects some of the blame onto said previous government if things do indeed get worse, whilst enabling them to claim early success if things turn out to be better than anticipated. Various negative ideas are also being floated with the aim of creating a feelgood factor borne of relief if the tough choices being made turn out to be less bad than is being suggested.
Certainly one suggestion being floated is abolition of the single person's discount on Council Tax. That would crucify me. What might not be being understood is that single people have to pay all the bills and keep a roof over their heads out of a single wage, and if they are low waged this is hard enough already. As well as low paid working singletons there will also be many pensioners living alone who would be hit too. Talk of massive fuel duty hikes is also unhelpful.
I am minded to give credit where credit is due but if they start hammering low paid working people like me, they can flush any support from me down the toilet. And scrapping the single persons discount would certainly hit many poor people including the working poor and many pensioners. Exempting Bands A, B and C would protect most of the poorer ones but would of course save a lot less money.

Is this idea something Labour are considering, or is it another thing on the long list of items Labour refuse to comment on individually before the Autumn budget?

In fairness it may well just prove to be the latter, amplified by the Tory media. Nevertheless, a reluctance to deny something means I cannot rule it out. And cannot be certain that it is not something being considered.

Yes, I agree its a bit cowardly of them, but I also understand that the second they answer that question another will be asked and another and another.

How about if the single person discount of 25% was limited to 25% of the value of a band D property tax? ie big properties would get progressively less than 25%

I think so, its pretty easy to see what band someone lives in and in most cases the individual would not apply if they knew they wouldn't get the discount. (Good idea Steve)
