Hockey has always been in the Olympics. Field hockey since 1908 and ice hockey since 1920. GB were world ranked number two so losing in the quarter final is a big disappointment. Wow. I knew its been in for ages, but didn't realise it was that long. Did the Ancient Greeks have anything comparable? Yes, according to Britannica - Hockey is believed to date from the earliest civilizations. The Arabs, Greeks, Persians, and Romans each had their own versions, and traces of a stick game played by the Aztec Indians of South America have been found. Hockey can also be identified with other early games, such as hurling and shinty. During the Middle Ages a French stick game called hoquet was played, and the English word may be derived from it. www.britannica.com/sports/field-hockeyThe ancient games were mostly individual events though, running, throwing, wrestling and equestrian so no team sports as far as I'm aware.

Still hoping they'll bring back painting, architecture, literature, music, and sculpture, personally..
Oh, and swimming obstacle race.
In fact, let's do it all "It's a Knockout" style.

I'd like to see the return of the tug of war. A fine old traditional game that fell out of fashion back in 1920 when it was last competed for.
As with all things, I blame Thatcher.

No love for the town planning event? Last won in 1948 by Yrjö Lindegren ( FIN ) for "The Centre of Athletics in Varkaus, Finland"

Never knew of Town Planning, but I can't see many nations being in the running for that today - does anyone "plan" towns any more?

By coincidence, was chatting last night with a friend's 13 year old girl - she (very sporty - a hurdler) and her team had just won a Guide's Tug of War contest at their camp last week (their anchor's a big gal..).

Certainly fits the Olympic motto Faster, Higher, Stronger better than many sports. I'm looking at you gymnastics.

The coverage of the women's road race had some great views of Paris esp Montmatre and Sacre Coer.
The race wasn't bad either
