No one is sucking the joy out of the Olympics for me. I love it. Been an avid viewer since at least the 1980 Moscow games. Coe v Ovett in the 800 and 1500m, Alan Wells in the 100m. You youngster you. My love of the Olympics goes back to Ann Packer, Mary Rand and Lyn Davies and those feats in 1964. But yes 1980 was absolutely gripping.

Didn't some guy in that Dutch team rape a 12 year old girl? I don't know if the IOC can choose to get rid of him or sanction them, maybe they already have, but I find that absolutely horrifying to be honest. The IOC take the view that it's not up to them to take such an action for so called spent convictions, his National Association should have and the Dutch should know it won't wash off.

The Commonwealth games in themselves sound as colonialist as it gets. I always cheer on West Indies to beat England in cricket. I bet that upsets a lot of very silly people.

Hydrofoil windsurfing is mental. 25 knots! Crazy, looks so much fun though.

He was 15 and they slept together. Still wrong but on a different level to abducting a child and raping her. In my book anyway.

I love sports, I love football - both playing and watching great teams but honestly the horrifying corruption over decades at the olympics, FIFA etc etc, anywhere you look in sport - F1 and even cricket which I absolutely adore - it all makes me so sour on the whole thing. Maybe it's best to just watch hobbyists doing it, it's closer to the real thing than all this fancy crap we don't need with huge carbon emissions/doping/people threatened if they underperform (many countries in the past like the Soviet Union) etc etc. Not worth it. Yes money has trashed most sport. I just watch to enjoy the quality now and don't follow who's who.

I understand, but I wouldn't want him on the olympic team, but you're right - they are two different things although it's considered 'statutory rape' in some countries. But yes I see what you're saying. It's still a very bad precedent to have him in the olympics regardless, if this is the standard society expect of us, which it should

NO She was 12 and he was 19 when he plied her with alcohol in order to rape her. She was older when he was finally convicted. www.bucksherald.co.uk/news/sports-star-who-raped-child-sentenced-in-aylesbury-786210

The Dutch seem to have taken the attitude that what happens in England stays in England. Deplorable.

This from Henning Wehn's latest mass email may amuse A) GB has 32 medals so far including 10 golds. Just because Germany has only 9 medals it doesn't make them as hard to win as the Euros. B) The Commonwealth is currently topping the medal table with 30 golds. More than China and the USA combined. C) Germany tried to build an Empire, twice, but both times Britain got the cane out of the cupboard and gave them a damn good thrashing.
