This is loosely based on a storyline from a TV detective show. PM answers, please.
‘There’s another man?!’ PC John Schaeffer shouted angrily into his mobile. ‘How long’s that been going on?’
‘Watch out, here comes trouble’, PC Jones raised her chin at the inspector’s Toyota as it appeared through the junkyard gates.
Schaeffer slid the mobile quickly into a pocket. It wouldn’t do his prospects any good to be found making private calls while on duty, especially with a high-profile victim like this. His domestic problems would have to wait. He bit on his rage as he scowled around him. The victim’s body lay splayed between a fire-gutted Volvo and a rust-pocked fridge.
‘At least, the poor bugger didn’t go quietly,’ he thought, taking stock of the injuries on the man’s hands and face. He shook his head at the junkyard detritus scattered around the body. He had never seen such an untidy and confused murder scene.
He was thinking that the forensics boys would have their work cut out for them when Sergeant Adams looked up from his inspection of a rotted pallet. ‘How’s your missus, Schaeffer? Be sure to give her my regards next time you see her’, he winked.
Schaeffer never knew whether it was the taunting tone or the sly knowing wink that tore his fist into the sergeant’s leering face. He didn’t much care as he glared down at the sergeant, now every bit as prone as the murder victim. ‘Stay away from my wife’, he gritted, shrugging off Jones’ effort to restrain him.
Adams' hand was at his mouth. ‘You’ll pay for this, Schaeffer’, he spat, pulling himself to his feet. ‘You’ve knocked out one of my effin’ teeth.’
At that moment, a dignified figure in butler’s dress weaved his way through the detritus. He took in the spectacle for a moment. ‘Ah, wrong murder scene,’ he apologised, before turning his back and departing for the junkyard’s rusted gates.
A detailed investigation discovered that the murderer had indeed returned to the scene of the crime. In fact, he was there that very day. Adams done it! The question is: why did he provoke Schaeffer like that?
Clue: The butler is a red herring.
