I read somewhere that mathematical theory holds that there are14 dimensions, rather than three.
Can anyone explain what that means? I can't even begin to conceive of another dimension. It's a fascinating idea, or at least I think it might be if I could get some sort of grasp of it.

17 I heard. It's some deep quantum shit that I can't get my head around. All theory no evidence as I understand it (which is not at all).

That sort of stuff hurts my head. Like trying to understand the vastness of space.

If you take time as the 4th dimension that opens things up a bit, I always found it weird that when you look at the sun you are seeing it as it was 6 minutes ago.
There are not many things that can actually be 2 dimensional except may be a shadow and that's as far as I get.
I did see an animation of a 3d object entering a 2d world which was very bizarre.
It shows how very much we do not know.

The scientists are also looking at the quantum universe as a possibility for another dimension, I have listened but it is way beyond me. From what I gather in the 2D world and a 3D object entering it, any beings in the 2D world would only see a 2D cross section of a 3D object, meaning it would look quite normal unless it moved through the 2D world and then it would look like it is changing shape. That's it my heads gone.

LOL! I feel your pain. Thanks.

It's a fascinating idea, or at least I think it might be if I could get some sort of grasp of it. i can try but it is a bit of a mind-bender. Don't expect to have total clarity on your first attempt to visualise. What you are describing is a form of ''string theory' which posit a large number of spacial dimensions. - the exact number is a matter of contention. The idea is that there are a large number of dimensions but some (most) of them are very small and are circular (wrapped) There are three dimensions (ignore time it's a funny one). You can visualise a tiny, wrapped 4th dimension as a microscopic loop of space at every single point in 3 dimensional space. This is just a visualisation though - the dimension is another proper direction across the whole universe (though it doesn't go very far). An object can be at x, y, z co-ordinates and also a further co-ordinate on this loop of space ((xyza). The object is still absolutely precisely at xyz in our familiar 3d space. The theory is that matter etc are wave (harmonic) phenomena in that extra dimensional space. - (simplifying) one kind of particle will be one kind of wave (harmonic) and other types of particles will be another. String theory is highly speculative and i think most people now agree it is a bit of dud.

If string is just theory then what is holding my trousers up?

I won't pretend to understand it, but I can see that my own thoughts as to what it might mean were completely wrong.

If string is just theory then what is holding my trousers up? Are you sure they are up? It is true that unless I look to see they are neither up or down. They are in fact Schrodinger's trousers. Heisenberg is uncertain whether they are up or down. Newton says they will fall down unless held up and Einstein says it's all relative.
