If the quote function isn't used, members aren't notified that someone has responded to their post. I've missed several responses to my posts because of this.
Often, I will check in, see if there are any responses, and leave if there aren't. I don't go through all the threads I've been involved in to see if someone has responded.
I'm sure some people do. Good for them. But the flow of discussion is helped if the quote function is used. On a budding forum like this, one with a very small membership, every post counts. The quote function helps to keep the forum vibrant.
Just sayin'.

I've just done that. I see that I participated in Zany's thread about employers' duty of care. In order to know whether anyone made a comment in response to it, I will have to read several pages. It's not the solution I was hoping for. But, maybe, I've misunderstood you.

It's a better than nothing solution Is it really too much trouble to hit the quote button before responding?

It's a better than nothing solution I don't understand. It's not the case that there is 'nothing' as an alternative - members could use the quote function. Almost all members do. Or, at least, almost all members have been using it until relatively recently.

You can't be bothered to use the quote function even though that requires no effort at all. What's your problem with using the quote function? It doesn't cost you anything and it's helpful to others. Thanks for using it with your last message. I hope you'll continue.

Did it not cross your mind that over quoting is a pain to trying to view a discusssion What on earth are you talking about? I can see why it might be a pain if there is a large meme or something, but otherwise it isn't. It's helpful. It draws attention to responses and helps to keep the conversation flowing. Whatever 'pain' you might suffer, it's nothing compared to the pain of having to go through every thread you've posted in to see if someone has responded to you. You're just being difficult for its own sake.

Did it not cross your mind that a reply might refer to the post immediately above it? Like this one

Thriving will be a challenge. You can help encourage traffic by making it as user-friendly and convenient as possible ... or not. Nobody's going to beg you. We face bigger challenges than your pettiness.

I'm far from the only poster who doesn't quote what it is bleeding obvious they are responding to. I wonder if you will show consistency and get as shitty with them too.

You will have seen that I raised the matter with Orac too. It's 'bleeding obvious' what people are referring to if I go to all the threads I've posted on and check whether there is a response. That's true. But it's a hell of a lot more convenient if I don't have to do that. And you know what? You can help in that respect. You have only to make a single click on your keyboard to save people that trouble. But you don't want to. That's okay. I'm not going to ask you again. If you don't want to make things easy, to encourage conversation and traffic around here, you don't have to. You're free to be as pointlessly stubborn and awkward as you like.
